1. Where on the window do I apply the film?

Smart window film needs to be applied to the INSIDE of the OUTERMOST pane of glass on each window. On a regular window or double glazed window this will mean the side which is the innermost to the room. However, if the window has secondary glazing e.g. two distinct separate glass panes, then the film needs to go on the inside surface of the outermost pane.

2. What should I do if I run out of solution?

Don't Panic! Although you should receive plenty of solution to complete the job a number of times over, in the unlikely event of running out of solution there is a household alternative that can be used. To make extra solution just mix a quarter of a teaspoon of 'no more tears' shampoo with a litre of warm water. Stir thoroughly and allow the bubbles to settle before using.

3. Why should I trim a gap around the edge of the film?

There are two important reasons to leave a small gap between the edge of the film and the glass edge. Firstly it allows removal of all the water from the adhesive side of the film. Without the gap it will be impossible to squeegee all the water from under the film. Secondly, the gap allows the glass to expand and contract, as normal, with changing weather conditions, without affecting the integrity of the film. If the film is mounted directly on the edge of the glass the expansion/contraction can cause the edges to begin to peel away. A good guide for the size of the gap needed is that of the thickness of a credit card, approximately 1 to 2mm.

4. How should I clean my window film?

The best way to clean smart window film is to use the cleaning/mounting solution that comes with it. Alternatively use the alternative solution as described in question 2 above. Always use lint free cloths and/or a squeegee to clean the film and never use abrasive pads or cleaning products.

5. How long should my smart window film last?

This will vary by quite a bit depending on the type of film used and the conditions it faces. It should be expected that your smart window film will last somewhere between 5 and 15 years.

6. Can I apply my window film to perspex, plastic or my car windows?

The basic answer to this question is no. Smart window film is designed purely for use on residential internal glass use and is unlikely to bond correctly to plastics, perspex or automotive glasses.

7. Do I need any specialist tools to install my smart window film?

Apart from what comes with the fitting kit the only really important tools you will require will be a tape measure or ruler. There are no specialist tools required for fitting smart window film.

The fitting contains:

Glass Cleaning Solution
Film Activation Solution
Edge Triming guide
Spray bottle
Window scourer pad
lint free cleaning cloth
utility knife
Window squeegee

8. Is smart window film expensive?

If compared to the alternatives available for completing the same job (e.g. blinds or specialist replacement glass) then the answer is no. Smart window film is a relatively low cost way of dealing with issues such as fading, insulation and privacy problems.

9. Can I get you to fit the film for me?

We do offer a comprehensive fitting service for smart window film, It is obviously not economically viable for very small jobs which can be readily completed at a DIY level. However, we can provide quotes for larger scale, more complex jobs such as applying smart window film through an entire conservatory. If you are unsure please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements.
